Decent hardware specs but terrible form factor & customer support,
I spent $2900 with Rain Computers on one of their top of the line Livebooks and am sorry to say that I can’t recommend that anyone buy from them.
The underlying hardware is really solid – fast processor, ram, hard drive. But there are a *lot* of quirks that make me feel like they haven’t fully fleshed out the correct form factor or their build process. Here are a couple:
-The included Firewire card is 34mm but the slot is 54mm making it easy to jostle and remove
-The included Firewire card, when plugged in, covers the 3rd USB port rendering it useless
-The function keys (antennae control, brightness control, etc) don’t work
-The plastic around the status LEDs is SUPER soft and scratches easily
-The included support DVD throws up this error when I load it up “Operating system not supported”
-The track pad is completely flush to the edge of the chassis, making it really uncomfortable to use (nowhere to rest your palms)
-I haven’t been able to get the laptop to wake up from hibernation. Have to do a hard boot.
On top of that, I’ve had a real horrible experience with their support department so far. They took 3 days to get back to me on 2 simple requests. Their excuse was that their servers were being upgraded… the least they could have done was update their auto-response message to say exactly that. Anyway, I couldn’t talk when they got back to me so they told me to call them back. I did so and left a message and still 3 days later I haven’t heard back.
I’m writing the post that I wish someone had written before I decided to purchase a laptop from them. I could have gotten a similarly spec’d laptop from Dell for $900 less.

|Repeat Customer – Very satisfied with my Rain systems,
I currently own both a desktop (Solstice) and a laptop (LiveBook) from Rain and I’ve been very pleased with both. When I wanted to move from an analog recording setup to a digital one a few years back I contacted Rain on the advice of a friend, told them what I was looking to do, and trusted them to build a system that would meet my needs.
Four years later, my Solstice, though getting on in years in terms of specs, is still the foundation of my recording setup. Whenever I’ve had an issue, or felt like maybe it needed an upgrade to stay current with the ever-increasing number of tracks I needed or plug-ins I threw at it, I’ve always had a good experience getting in contact with the company. My e-mails are answered quickly and my phone calls, if not immediately answered, are returned promptly.
I expanded my setup earlier this year with a LiveBook that I use as much for personal business as professional, my reasoning being that a well-designed system is just that, and should function ably regardless of what I need it to do. So far I haven’t been disappointed. I experienced one issue with a missing driver and a quick phone call remedied that.
I think it’s easy to put together a bunch of components and call it a computer, but making all the bits work and play well together strikes me as the real strength of a company in this business. My experience is that Rain builds a solid, stable, versatile system and they back that up with excellent customer service.
